Why do we need dress codes?

Dresscode - Lust oder Last?

What we actually need all of the many dress codes that are so difficult to understand for people who want to "just put"? Would not it be easier, this bunch of superfluous rules simply abolish it, and leave each to his choice of clothing itself? In short: Can you look at the Regelkram not just save? I maintain that it would by no means simple, but more complicated and also open-ended in a fatal way to rules in the fashion to do without.

Dress code as perceived constraints

Let us first consider an everyday example: Most people know exactly what kind of clothes a certain social environment expects of them. Nowhere we encounter dress codes more frequently than in daily work. For many German is the handle to suit including shirt, tie and plain leather shoes duty or at least little debatable. Especially in recent years will also loudly complaining about it. It is, as I often hear friends talking formulate prescriptive and egalitarian to suppress the personal clothing style such. Worse was to get dictated a way to tie color specified wardrobe for special occasions such as the own wedding.

The illusion of complete individuality

I maintain that this argument is short-sighted. A comparison with other, also strongly dominated by rules discipline our lives may perhaps gain clarity in this respect: the road. No one would ever think to ask for complete individuality on the streets of Germany. Any reader with license can probably imagine how the car connection between Munich and Berlin would look like, would not apply the official rules for highways here. Who should still focus on accident-free steering, if already somewhere all the attention calls for the election of the lane with the lowest number of traffic or a reasonable pace between "fast" and "safe"?
Likewise, it would be useful to apply a single set of rules of the Highway Code at all road and area types. Motorway rules in Tempo 30 zones or even in public parking lots? No thank you. One-way regulations on federal roads? Again, I would decline with thanks. You see, even in other disciplines of our everyday life we take rules gratefully. Who sticks to the road traffic regulations can be sure - the same goes for dress codes.

Clothes make the man

Of course, some readers will say now, on the road it go, after all, human life, which is why rules are there quite appropriate. Here I can only answer two. First, even our wardrobe pursued alongside individual vanities a higher purpose, that of good impression on our environment. To leave a good impression is one of many forms, to be polite. And politely on the other hand just also who the other does not take the right of way. Second: In addition to the analogy of road transport still could find many other everyday examples. Cooking recipes? Especially for beginners regulated thankfully. Postal services? Gottlob dominated by rules. Structural Analysis? Justice? Federal government? Rules as far as the eye can see.

Rules save time

We live in a world that is essentially based on the saving unnecessary reflection by rules. Wherever we are experiencing some form of cooperation, we also experience rules. It's time to accept it for our personal wardrobe. And by the way: Who rules the rules of good clothes until much joy will find it to feel dressed starting from these free and personalized and individually live out rules within healthy limits. Those who reject dress codes, however, from the outset, will never learn those important basics that make many everyday clothes and unnecessary questions so the fun of good wardrobe can ever arise in the first.
